The Open Door Food Kitchen feeds the hungry in St. Joseph a nutritious lunch 365 days a year. Approximately 40 churches, businesses and individuals volunteer to cook and serve sometimes 200 or more patrons a day.

Colonel John Buckley served 33 years in the Army. During his service, John commanded infantry soldiers in combat and peacekeeping operations. After retiring, he continued to be a tremendous advocate for veterans. John now works at Koch Industries and has developed a sustainable military veteran recruiting and retention program. He volunteers his time to help prepare veterans for employment as well as mentors local and national companies to place veterans with jobs. John has been active in Passageways, Advance Kansas, and the Greater Wichita Veterans Advocacy Board. He is now developing recruiting and employment programs for people with criminal records. Colonel Buckley is a recipient of the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, two Bronze Stars, and a Combat Infantryman’s badge. Thank you for your dedication and service, John!
Gary Bartlett was drafted into the Army in 1966, days shy of his 20th birthday. After training, he was sent to Vietnam where he served in the 25th and 4th Infantry Divisions as a foot soldier. In 1968, Gary stepped on a land mine and suffered nearly fatal wounds that resulted in the loss of his legs. After returning to the states, he spent nearly 2 years in and out of hospitals and was told he couldn’t ride horses, one of his life passions. In the early 1970s, Gary defied the odds and had a special saddle created for team roping in junior college finals. He has also led demonstrations for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Finals. Gary is a recipient of the Army’s Purple Heart Medal, an avid fisherman, and hunter. Thank you for your service and sacrifice, Gary!

This organization is rooted on the premises that we will overcome suicide through faith, hope, love and education. Their mission is to educate adolescents and parents about suicide prevention in order to empower them to use their voice to save a life.

The team at Patterson Gives Back organized a school supply drive supporting The Pando Initiative. Their mission is to connect with students to help them engage and thrive in education and their future. Friends of the Animal Shelter works to increase animal adoption and redemption rates while minimizing the number of euthanized animals; educating the community regarding animal care and welfare issues; and helping care for the medical needs of all sick and injured animals that come through the Animal Shelter.

Patterson Legal Group & WIBW teamed up again to honor Pet Assistance Network of Topeka as September’s non-profit hero in the Topeka area.
The mission of the Pet Assistance Network of Topeka is to provide temporary shelter consisting of healthy, appropriate and compassionate living conditions, enrichment activities, and personal care, to those pets whose owners are homeless or currently out of home who are being served by one of PANT’s partner agencies. At such time as the owner is no longer homeless or out of home, the pet will be reunited with its owner, preserving the human/animal bond.

The student-led coffee shop is based at Central High School and serves school staff, allowing the students to practice money skills, professional conversations and professional dress so they are prepared to begin a job once they leave high school.
Ashley Stanton, Special Education Teacher, received a grant through the St. Joseph School District Foundation to start the classroom coffee shop.

Patterson Legal Group & WIBW teamed up again to honor Team Blake Foundation as the non-profit hero in the Topeka area for August.
The mission of the Team Blake Foundation is to assist in reducing the burden of childhood cancer and other life-threatening illnesses on children and their families.
They accomplish this by:
Providing care packages to children who are going through the unimaginable
Providing spiritual and emotional support to families
Financially supporting the families with medical costs, household expenses, or other related costs.
Donating to other community non-profits such as the Ronald McDonald house, a local organization that assists children and their families with health concerns
Donating funds to pediatric cancer research and spreading pediatric cancer awareness

Patterson Legal Group, KWCH, and the NBC Baseball Foundation partnered to recognize and honor our local heroes during the NBC World Series. These heroes included any active or retired military members or public safety officers.
Each HERO was recognized in the stadium during the game as everyone in the arena cheered and hats were removed in a show of respect.
